Hand jigsaw – an “artist’s brush” on wood

Each of us has at least once seen beautiful openwork products from wood, but not everyone knows what tool was used to do it. To create a variety of curls and stick-on carvings, a hand jigsaw U-shape is used.

Jigsaw carving

One of the types of decoration of wooden products is carving. You can realize any fantasy patterns with the help of an easy-to-use tool, familiar to everyone since the lessons of labor at school. Besides manual jigsaws, there are also jigsaws with an electric drive, but still for high-precision shape carving the first type is most often used.Cutting with a hand jigsaw

Structure of a hand jigsaw

What is a hand jigsaw? It is a U or U-shaped frame with screw clamps on the edges for saw holders. There is a special tensioning screw above the top mount that is used to keep the saw steady, eliminating all sagging options. With a sagging saw you can’t do woodwork properly, and the saw blade is likely to break in a short time.

A properly secured saw blade has its teeth pointing up and down. It is also worth paying attention to how to choose the right saw blade. Steel saw blades differ in thickness and tooth measurement. Each type has its own numbering.

Remember: the fineness and smoothness of the thread directly depends on the size of the teeth of the saw.

Getting Started

To start your creative work on wood, in addition to the jigsaw, you will need several other tools, namely:

  • An awl with a wooden handle;
  • A hand drill with a set of drill bits;
  • A few files and emery cloths;
  • set of screw clamps;
  • a knife-cutter.

You will also need a pencil and, if you wish, a pattern template or tracing paper.

Most often thin boards or a plywood sheet are used for jigsaw cutting. For convenience, take a hardwood dovetail table. Start the job by preparing the table. Secure it with two wire clamps to the tabletop or workbench frame. In the same way, attach to the cutout “tail” the workpiece with the transferred pattern.

How to saw with a jigsaw correctly?

If you have set everything correctly, the jigsaw will only saw when moving downward. Do not allow the jigsaw to tilt as you work.

Don’t forget that when working with the jigsaw, you should not turn the tool itself, but the workpiece!

To cut inner contours, make a through hole close to the contour of the line. If you are using thin material, a sharp awl will do for creating the hole, and for more solid materials, a drill. Next, release one end of the saw from the clamp, and once inside the hole, reattach it for further cutting.

After cutting the inner contours, you can begin working on the outer contours. Do not allow the saw blade to get hot, otherwise it will quickly deteriorate.

Today on the Internet you can easily find many unique and useful video tutorials concerning jigsaw cutting, in addition, the modern “world wide web” offers a large selection of illustrations with step-by-step performance of those or other tasks related to figure cutting.
